Interesting question: What’s a firefighter worth? It’s about perspective. Praise and criticism. Laziness and heroism. A burden and a blessing.

Have you ever needed them - really needed them? Not “I’ve been sick for a couple days” or “I think I broke my foot” needed them. “My sons not breathing” or “the cars on fire and there are people inside” needed them.

Have you ever seen the face of a firefighter after a “bad” day? Have you ever heard the cries from the shower? The blank, emotionless face burying the burden of their day under apathy? Gotten up to find them pacing the house because sleep is elusive?

Have you ever seen the end of a firefighters life? Not the heroic end, but the slow crawl to eternity. The body of a man or woman who has battled not only fire, but cancer, substance abuse, or heart disease?

Perspective will likely change your opinion. What’s a firefighter worth...
