Did you know that losing weight is 80 percent nutrition and 20 percent exercise?

Although working out is good for your heart, helps maintain muscle mass and is good for your mental well being, it would be impossible to lose weight by just exercising.

I don’t believe in diets. I’m Italian and a real foodie and love to eat! What I believe in is changing your nutrition with some simple tricks. I like to replace one meal a day with a high protein shake. If I’m trying to lose weight, I replace two meals a day with a shake. Protein keeps you fuller longer and it’s a great way to build muscle and get your body in fat burning mode.

I have a mid-morning snack, lunch, mid-afternoon snack and then dinner. My snacks are simple – a piece of fruit or some crackers, or maybe some yogurt or cottage cheese. The company I get my shakes from has an array of high protein snacks. It also has delicious crackers, in assorted flavors, that are packed with 10 grams of protein.

I always pack a lunch bag when I’m doing errands, so I’m not tempted to waste calories and money on fast food. My new favorite thing to make bowls – breakfast bowls, lunch bowls and dinner bowls. I layer ingredients and find that it’s a great way to sneak in lots of vegetables, quinoa and beans.

This week I layered some sautéed spinach and mushrooms and onions. My next layer was brown rice with some black beans. I topped it off with a fried egg – using Pam, of course – and some sliced avocado. I served it with half of a warmed spinach tortilla. Not only was it colorful and looked delicious, it was delicious!

Another great trick I learned was to use cauliflower instead of meat. You can rice it yourself or buy it already riced in the frozen food department. Put a little oil in a frying pan and sauté it. That keeps it firm.

I love to use it for a taco bowl. Add taco mix to the sautéed cauliflower. Use that as the base of your bowl. Then start layering your favorite ingredients. I use chopped lettuce, tomatoes and beans. The great thing about this recipe is that it is comprised of mostly vegetables! I then sprinkle some chopped black olives and shredded cheese. I serve it with a lightly browned spinach wrap.

A great addition to bowls, to add more flavor is salsa. Homemade is the best.

Try these out. I guarantee you will love them. For dinner tonight, I’m making a Thanksgiving bowl!
