A prayer for those who served in WWI

Editor’s note: The following is the text of a prayer Robert Lancia read during Monday’s Memorial Day observance.

A special prayer on Memorial Day for our World War I Vets:

As we think about those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy every day, we begin by remembering those who died fighting World War I. While American losses were less than those of other nations, we still lost 116,516 service members.

Dear Lord, what they faced back then, is something we're facing 100 years later; a pandemic. For while 116,516 service members died, only 53,402 personnel died in combat, while the rest, 63,114 died due to the Spanish flu epidemic in 1918. So as we remember those who died so long ago, in a way we are still uniquely connected, because we as a nation today face not just a physical enemy overseas but also an invisible one too.

Lord, please hold our servicemen and servicewomen in your strong arms. Cover them with your sheltering grace and your presence as they stand in the gap for our protection today.

We also remember the families of our troops; the families of our troops from so long ago as well as the families of our troops today. We ask for your unique blessings to fill their homes, and we pray your peace, provision, and strength will fill their lives.

May the members of our armed forces continue to be supplied with courage to face each day and may they trust in the Your mighty power to accomplish each task. Let our military brothers and sisters feel our love and support.

In Your name we pray. Amen.
