LET HIM GO

**½

(Depressing melodrama)

Diane Laine and Kevin Costner play grandparents who will go to extreme lengths to save their young grandson from the clutches of an evil family.

This depressing, slow and violent melodrama is a complete wasted of Laine and Costner’s talents.

The movie opens showing us a happy couple and their son living in Montana with grandma and grandpa.

Their son dies in a horse accident, and in some bad editing their daughter-in-law and grandson end up in North Dakota with an abusive man and his crazy mother and brothers.

Margaret and George hop in their car and head out to save the boy.

The movie goes from a slow, plodding start to a frantic showdown with the weird family that turns extremely violent. People are shot, fingers are cut off with a hatchet, a house is set on fire and people die before a rescue occurs and those remaining ride off into the sunset.

Not sure what the point was.

Rated R with extreme violence, profanity and downright meanness.

Note: “Let Him Go” is playing at the Showcase along with older movies, including the excellent “The Departed” with Leonardo DeCaprio, Matt Damon and Marc Wahlberg.

THE KEEPER

****

(True story of a soccer goalie)

Hopefully, the Avon will keep this over, or it will show upon some premium TV channel.

It is the true story of Bert Trautmann, a German soldier and prisoner of war who is recruited by the British as a goalkeeper for a losing local team.

Trautmann proves to be an incredible keeper. The team starts winning their games. The war ends, and he keeps playing for them.

He falls in love with the coach’s daughter, and they marry and have children. He signs for the Manchester City team and during his press interview his war experience and medals are revealed, making him the subject of controversy, especially in the Jewish community.

The movie is both romantic and tragic, and makes you think and forgiveness and prejudice, with one of the most moving endings we have seen in a long time.

Note: We have always thought that English movies should have subtitles so that we could catch that blimey accent. THIS ONE DOES!

Note #2: Manager Richard Dulgarian made an interesting observation that movie theaters are one of the safer places during the pandemic as long as people maintain social distancing. Why? Because people are all facing the same direction.

NETFLIX

“Paranoid” is an eight-episode British murder mystery that involves three dysfunctional detectives who are more interesting than the actual murder case. This character-driven series is fun to watch and has you rooting for the good guys.

“Unbelievable” is a fascinating American series about a serial rapist and the two completely opposite female detectives who work on solving the case. Based on a true story, and starring one of my favorite actresses, Toni Collette, it will keep you guessing with its clever plot twists and leave you satisfied at the end.
