Beach passes sold at Library

The Warwick Public Library, Sandy Lane branch, will be selling Warwick beach passes starting on Saturday, June 19. Beachgoers will be able to purchase passes anytime the library is open. Passes are $20 for residents, per car; $40 for nonresidents, per car; $10 for seniors (60), veterans, and disabled residents, per car; and $20 for seniors (60), veterans, and disabled nonresidents, per car. Day passes are sold at individual beaches. Passes are good from July 1 to September 6. Proof of residency is required, with a state ID/license and car registration. Proof of age, veteran, and disability status is also required. Cash, check, or money order made out to the City of Warwick will be accepted.

RIPIN drive-up vaccine clinic

On Saturday, June 19 and Saturday, July 10 from 9 to 11 a.m., the Rhode Island Parent Information Network (RIPIN) will be hosting a drive-through vaccine clinic. The event will take place at their office parking lot, located at 300 Jefferson Blvd. The clinic is open to all ages 12 and older, but is particularly ideal for children, youth, or adults with disabilities, or for anyone for whom it is difficult to get a vaccine at another site. Get a Job Thursdays

We Make RI, an organization that provides free manufacturing training, is hosting a series of job fairs every Thursday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at their offices at 200 First Avenue in Cranston. The next job fair will take place today, June 10. We Make RI offers job seekers a chance to meet with employers, get career counseling, resume help, and more. Goddard Park farmers market

Super Sonic Saturday

On Saturday, June 19 at 1 p.m., friends of the Shaw family are hosting a Super Sonic Saturday to benefit Warwick’s pint-sized superhero, Rowan Shaw. Rowan is currently facing another 10-month stretch of chemotherapy to treat his metastatic neuroblastoma. The family-friendly event will be held at the Elks Lodge at 1915 West Shore Road and will feature a live DJ, face painting, balloon animals, character appearances, and more. Drive-thru food pantry

Spring Green Memorial Church, located at 1350 Warwick Ave, will be holding their monthly drive-thru food pantry on Saturday, June 19. Empowering women through prayer

Join Shepard of the Valley UMC at 604 Seven Miles Road for a Day of Prayer on June 19. The United Methodist Women will open their church and labyrinth from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the annual Prayer and Self-Denial Celebration. Join anytime during the day to take part in contemplative, reflective, and interactive opportunities of prayer. The theme of this year’s Day of Prayer is She Leads: Empowering Women to Make a Difference. A free-will collection will be available, and offerings can be made to make real change in the lives of women, children, and youth around the world.

What happened to Snow Town? 

A hardscrabble Providence neighborhood near the State House, Snow Town was home to a mixed-race community surrounded by saloons and brothels. In 1831, a racially motivated mob burned the homes of Black residents on nearby Olney Street. On Monday, June 21 at 7:30 p.m., Heather Olson will describe the people and memories of Snow Town and show artifacts excavated at the site by the Public Archeology Lab (PAL). In a virtual program she will show how the PAL used state of the art technology to uncover this lost neighborhood. Olson was project manager of the Snow Town excavation for Public Archeology Lab in Pawtucket. This free, Zoom program is sponsored by the East Greenwich Historic Preservation Society. Field Trip to Avant Gardens

The Cindy-Wood Garden Club in East Greenwich is sponsoring a trip to Avant Gardens on Tuesday, June 22. Located in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, Avant Gardens is rated one of the best plant nurseries in New England, with a huge selection of unusual shrubs, trees, perennials and exotic succulents. Watercolor workshop at the Warwick Center for the Arts

Local artist Kendra Ferreira is hosting a watercolor workshop at the Warwick Center for the Arts on Saturday, June 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This one-day workshop will focus on capturing the essence of the coastline by drawing and painting shells and other seaside treasures. Artists of all levels are welcome, and will learn different tips and techniques using watercolor pencils to create layers, washes, and textures. The class costs $125 for non-members, $90 for members. Food collection to benefit local pantries

A drive-through food collection to benefit the RI Community Food Bank and West Bay Marketplace, sponsored by Lakewood Baptist Church will be held on Saturday, June 26. The event will take place at the church parking lot at 255 Atlantic Ave, rain or shine; from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Non-perishable food items and monetary donations are welcome. Raptors fly to the Warwick Public Library

The Audubon Society of Rhode Island is hosting a presentation on birds of prey at the Warwick Public Library on Monday, June 28 at 6:30 p.m. Some special feathered guests will also be in attendance. Pilgrim High School reunion

The Pilgrim High School classes of 1966 to 1969 are invited to a reunion barbeque on August 22 from 1 to 6 p.m. The event will be held at Fort Getty in Jamestown. Food will be served at 2 p.m. and includes pulled pork chicken, ribs, coleslaw, cornbread, and dessert. Gas grills are available to use. There will be a dance floor, volleyball court, and beach with swim access. The location is handicap accessible, and attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chair and drinks. Ben Boyle & Ron Kostyla Golf Classic

Registration for the 38th Annual Ben Boyle & Ron Kostyla Golf Classic for SHARE is now open. The event will be held at the Richmond Country Club on Sunday, August 29, with tee-off at 8 a.m. Day-of registration will open at 7 a.m., with dinner and awards following the end of last play. Golfers are invited to participate in remembrance of Boyle and Kostyla, two community members who dedicated their lives to helping others. The golf package includes a full game of 18 holes, access to refreshments in the morning and lunch in the afternoon, a swag bag, team awards, event prizes, and a sit-down dinner reception. A raffle will also be available. Prizes include a weekend getaway to New Hampshire, 40” Smart TV, Kindle Fire tablet, $100 Amazon gift card, and a grill. AARP field trips

The 210 chapter of AARP is hosting a series of field trips. The first is on Thursday, September 16 to the Newport Playhouse & Cabaret Restaurant for a buffet lunch followed by a performance of Murder at the Howard Johnson’s. The lighthearted and entertaining comedy follows the story of a love triangle that takes place at the Howard Johnson’s Motor Inn. Bus leaves at 9:30 a.m. from the I-95 Park & Ride at Exit 6A, Coventry, and will return around 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $109 per person and payment is due by August 16. From Sunday, November 7 to Tuesday, November 9, AARP is hosting a trip to Atlantic City. On the 7th, attendees will depart at 7:30 a.m. from the I-95 Park & Ride at Exit 6A, Coventry and travel to Atlantic City’s first casino, Resorts. Upon arrival, guests will receive $20 casino slot cash, $50 in food credits, and a casino show. The buss will return to RI around 7:30 p.m. on the 9th. The tour cost is $269 per person for a double room, $259 per person for a triple room, and $369 per person for a single room. Outdoor yoga at Conimicut Point Park

NAMI-RI offers family support groups

The Rhode Island chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI-RI)

offers Family Support Groups. These free, peer-led support groups are designed for adult loved ones of people with mental health conditions.

The support groups are approximately 90 minutes long (currently, on Zoom) and meet every other week or monthly.

By sharing your experiences in a safe, confidential setting, you can gain hope and develop supportive relationships. NAMI Family Support Group will help you aim for better coping skills, find strength in sharing experiences, not judge anyone’s pain, forgive ourselves and reject guilt, embrace humor as healthy, accept that we cannot solve every problem, and understand that mental health conditions are no one's fault and can be traumatic experiences.

Warwick Vets reunion rescheduled

The Warwick Veterans Memorial High School class of 1960 reunion has been rescheduled for Saturday Sept. 18. The event will be held at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet at 1 Rhodes Place. There will be a social hour from 12 to 1 p.m., and then a luncheon buffet from 1 to 4 p.m. The cost is $40 per person. Fez-tival of Trees returns to Rhodes on the Pawtuxet

Rhodes on the Pawtuxet is now accepting applications for crafters, vendors, and artists for the 7th annual Rhode Island Shriners Fez-tival of Trees. The event is scheduled for November 27 and 28. In 2019, over 3,000 guests strolled through the fundraising event Vendors have a few space options this year. Options include 8’ table in the mezzanine area for one day at $75, 8x8 front lobby space for both days at $200, and 10x10 front lobby space for both days at $250. Summer employment opportunities

The Warwick Departments of Recreation, Public Works, and the Sewer Authority are hiring for a number of positions. To be eligible, applicants must be Warwick residents with plans to continue their education full-time in September. The deadline for all applications is June 4, and applications can be accessed at www.warwickri.gov/personnel-department/pages/employment-opportunities. The Department of Public Works and Warwick Sewer Authority are hiring summer laborers. The position is full-time, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The pay rate is $11.50 to $15 per hour, depending on experience. All applicants must be 18 years old as of June 15. The Department of Public Works is also hiring for the beach litter crew. This is a part-time position, 20 hours per week, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The pay rate is $11.50 per hour, and students aged 14 to 17 are encouraged to apply. Working papers are required for anyone under 18 years old. The Parks and Recreation Department is hiring beach fee collectors. This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, but some part-time positions may be available. Applicants must be available to work weekends and holidays. The pay rate is $11.50 per hour, and applicants must be 18 years old as of June 15. Parks and Recreation in need of lifeguards Lifeguards are needed for all city indoor and outdoor swimming facilities for the summer 2021 season. There is no residency requirement for the lifeguard positions. Applicants must be at least 16 years old and must bring a photo ID with verification of birth to apply. Lifeguard certification cards must be original, up-to-date, and not due to expired before Sept. 30, 2021.
