Ceremony caps 63 firefighter promotions over past 2 years

Posted

Mayor Joseph Solomon is equipped to withstand the heat following the promotional ceremony of 63 firefighters, including Chief Peter McMichael, Wednesday night before a crowd of more than 400 people at the Crowne Plaza.

The celebration recognizing promotions made over the past two years was funded by the firefighters. Nonetheless, it generated some controversy. WPRO radio talk show host Dan Yorke questioned why the event wasn’t held at a public venue and why several councilmen who had not voted to approve the firefighters’ contract had not been invited to attend.

But that was hardly heat.

Nonetheless, the union was prepared to see the mayor was outfitted for the hottest of conditions as they presented him with a helmet and heavy-duty firefighting jacket. He was ready to join them on the front lines.

“We have a mayor that has also taken a hands-on approach, and we thank him for that. He’s stood with us on many occasions – sometimes tragic – in the worst of weather and outcomes. And he has done it because he cares about this city and this fire department,” union president Michael Correiro said in calling Solomon to come forward for the presentation.

That tone of cooperation and collaboration underscored an evening where the spotlight was focused on the department and those promoted. As master of ceremonies, Firefighter Michael Boynton Jr. read out the names of those promoted in groups, they stood at attention in the front of the audience to be pinned by a member of their family. McMichael and the mayor personally congratulated each of them exchanging a salute and handshake.

Kicking off the promotional ceremony, Solomon administered the oath of office to McMichael followed by the oath collectively to the firefighters.

“The excellence of this department is because of the dedication of our current members and because of those who came before us,” McMichael said. He noted that the Warwick department is the only one in the state to receive federal funds to operate a Regional Technical Rescue Team, Hazardous Materials Response Team, Flammable Liquids Task Force and Dive Team as well as being a part of the Narragansett Bay Marine Task Force. He said these added responsibilities are a reflection of the “dedication and professionalism of the men and women of the department.”

Solomon did not skip over the bumpy road to reach a three-year contract in which firefighters gave up a total of seven sick, holiday and personal days; agreed that firefighters hired after July 1, 2019 pay into a trust fund to help pay for post-retirement health care; and took no pay raise in the first year followed by 2 percent raises in the second and third years.

“Tonight, as we celebrate your determination always to better yourselves and continue to improve the way we serve our citizens, businesses and visitors, we also recognize a new way forward for the relationship between the city and its firefighters,” he said.

“As we all know, thanks to the persistence of union leadership and the city’s negotiating team, we recently reached a three-year agreement. It was not always an easy road to ratification – one firefighter, remarked that he ‘never fought so hard to give up so much.’ Ultimately, however, we reached a resolution that is a win for our community’s taxpayers, fair to the union and good for the future fiscal health of our city,” the mayor said.

The mayor also quoted segments of a letter to the editor by Briget D’Antonio, in which she described the dedication of her husband, Warwick firefighter Joseph D’Antonio.

“I truly believe that those who enter firefighting as a profession haven’t chosen a career, but instead are answering a calling,” the mayor said.

Those recognized at the ceremony and the dates of their promotions can be viewed in the photos at the top of the article.

"Kicking off the promotional ceremony, Solomon administered the oath of office to McMichael followed by the oath collectively to the firefighters."

Based on this quote from Mr Howell, who was present, I believe this was a public event, no matter if the union paid for it. The public was not allowed to attend swearing in of the chief of the Dept. Neither he, or the Mayor, are WFD Union members and I believe they should not have held this event where OATHES were administered. Will have to file an open meeting violation, because taxpayer monies were spent when CITY EMA RV was brought to the event as well as ENGINES. 3, 9, Yellow loaned fire engine. Ladder 3, WFD black unmarked vehicles, and no doubt the New Chiefs vehicle and Mayors cars. All owned by the taxpayers.

Both Mayor and WFD Chief were left messages about this event being public or private, and cost to taxpayers on Monday and Wednesday last week before event. Still haven't returned the calls to answer the questions. Still waiting for them to respond to my public records requests for documents surrounding these promotions, and this event.

    TAXPAYERS STAND BY.

    Mr. Simoneau,

You’re entitled to your opinion. Follow up all you like. Once again, every single one of these promotions were already long in effect as they had already been voted on by the Board of Public safety in complete compliance with open meetings laws. What occurred here was strictly ceremonial. Again, the ceremony was paid for by us and our Union. Now, you don’t think any of the apparatus should have been there because it cost the taxpayers a minuscule amount in fuel. Well, we paid for the ceremony to be held at a hotel, thus keeping the lights off and the heat low at city hall that evening, saving the taxpayers money on the energy bill. We’ll call it a wash. And let’s not forget that what you’re saying is merely one man’s opinion. It also happens to be a minority one. The vast, vast majority of taxpayers would find absolutely nothing wrong with a few trucks outside a ceremony the Union paid for. The fact is, a very small group of people, of which you are a member, will find fault in absolutely everything and anything related to this Fire Dept. Even paying for our own promotional ceremony displeases you.

My problem is with the Mayor and the New Fire Chief kissing ass and fraternizing with the people they are supposed to protect the taxpayers from. It's a conflict, in my opinion, and even worse that the is that the Chief helps Mayor negotiate raises for the firefighters working for him, and LOW AND BEHOLD, the Mayor then gives him the same percentage raise the union gets. Essentially he approves his own raises. Chief already overpaid, since he makes 122K, not counting cost of all other benefits, when the Mayor only makes 100K.

This doesn't mean that Mayor needs a raise. It means All the Dept heads making more than the Mayor need a reduction. Chief also gets very hefty pension from City of Providence. This should not be allowed, and his prior pension should be suspended when they decide to take a new City job.

For that money, you think he would be Professional enough to return voice mail messages to the people paying his salary, when he requested that persons calls to be sent to him specifically.

Looks like Johnny Pajamas is back on the war path. Now that his buddies Cushman, Block Head, Stacia, and the gasoline dumper/animal abuser have pretty much thrown in the towel on this subject, Johnny Pajamas keeps up his feeble attempt in harassing the mayor and the firefighters.

Here's some advice for you Pajamas-instead of wasting your time on fire department public records requests, send a public records request to the city of Providence and ask them why they gave you a phony TAX FREE disability pension for a bogus injury.

Ladies and gentlemen, prepare for the usual response from Johnny Pajamas-"put your head on a swivel", I'm coming for you", "tick took", etc., etc.

And Johnny...if you look at the pictures attached to the article the Beacon was kind enough to list everyone that was promoted. No need for APRA.

And, Mr. Sweatpants, if you weren’t such a whack job constantly threatening people online and stalking others in real life (The Travis’s) perhaps they’ll could have opened the ceremony to the public. But nobody, not even your band of taxpayer sponsored misfits, wants to deal with you. You’re the most embarrassing of the bunch.

You have to give Stacia and Block Head credit-at least they threw their names in the hat and ran for office, even though they were beaten badly, but Mr. Pajamas chooses to spew his rage from behind the keyboard in his damp and musty basement.

The nation’s astoundingly well-paid public firefighters insist that they receive their high salaries and pensions (averaging around $175,000 a year in total compensation in California, with age-50 retirements and schedules that allow them to sleep on the job and work only a few days every two weeks) because of the terrible dangers they face on the job. They do face occasional and serious dangers, but according to a new National Public Radio report, such dangers are well below those faced by most of America’s workers.

The average death rate in 2011 was 3.5 per 100,000 workers for the average American worker. Fishermen had the most dangerous jobs with 121 deaths per 100,000, followed by loggers and pilots. Firefighters die at a rate of 2.5 per 100,000 workers, which is slightly above the rate for cashiers (1.6). Yet not many cashiers — or loggers or fishermen or taxi drivers, for that matter — receive “3 percent at 50” retirement plans courtesy of taxpayers. Police officers died at the rate of 18.6 per 100,000, which is significantly below farmers and just above construction workers, although well above the national average. About half of the police deaths are because of car accidents.

By the way, the government considers it an “on the job” death when a firefighter or cop dies from heart attacks, cancer and other common ailments. These are referred to as presumptions. It’s a presumptuous standard, but one that unlocks myriad benefits for surviving family members.

Police and fire also argue for their millionaires’ pension — one would need several million dollars in the bank to receive a lifelong six-figure payout for employee and spouse — based on the idea that they die shortly after retirement. Union officials repeat that falsehood, but even the union-friendly California Public Employees’ Retirement System released a presentation showing that the longest-living category of public employee is a cop followed by a firefighter. They tend to live well into their ’80s which, if you think about it, is why there are those huge unfunded pension liabilities.

All jobs have their dangers and stresses and I don’t wish to minimize those faced by public safety officials, but their unions promote an outsized sense of danger for disturbingly political reasons, just as their unions exploited the 9/11 tragedies for cheap political gain. I wish everyone a long and healthy life, but it would be nice if public-safety unions stopped overplaying the dangers they face in order to hit up the public for more cash. It’s time to stick to the facts.

WFD should be making alot less than what they are making. More than half the day is spent sitting on their ass, cruising the City wasting gas & wear and tear on vehicles, and let's not forget shopping runs. They go to Union events, anywhere they want, with their trucks while on duty being paid.

None of them, including the Chief, should make more than the Mayor of the City. We could easily go private, or at a minimum, cut the staff by one third, except that they use firefighter written bullshit studies and so-called expert requirements documents that make manpower higher, and equipment more than ever needed. It is all a SCAM, from the top down. The only reason they get away with it is because the National FF organization, and local Unions control the SCUMBAG politicians at all levels of our entire government. WFD are all overpaid legends in their own minds. Real firemen call WFD CELLAR DWELLERS. Any serious fires in the city turn out to be total loses. Majority of calls are medical in nature, but they send engines on ALL calls to bump up their calls for service statistics.

Wake up taxpayers, and demand changes to stop this scam, that has been going on for far to long, because SCUMBAG POLITICIANS will never do it until forced too.

Isn't there an attempted murder investigation being conducted by the state police regarding some little man who was speaking at a city council meeting and got scared? I think the guy just installed one of those door bells to keep that of who is coming and going. Poor guy looks a little like Danny DeVito. How did he even get on the force? Must have been some exception.

Is it true they negotiated a special padded seat in the fire truck so he could see over the dash board?

I also hear they built a new step stool for the little guy so he can pull out the hoes on the back of the truck without hitting himself in the face with it?

For anyone who wants to see the true Johnny Pajamas, click on the Beacon story about police officers addresses being shielded from the public. In the comment section of that article, Johnny Pajamas writes:

"I CHOOSE not to run, and work with CORRUPT SCUMBAGS. That happens to be why I CHOSE to leave the PPD. Bunch of dopes, or CORRUPT SCUMBAG POLITICIANS wearing uniforms. You wish you could earn what I make a year COWARD."

Well Johnny The Liar, previously you stated you left the police department due to a "work related injury", and now you're saying you left the police department because you didn't want to work with "corrupt scumbags " (your words). So what's the true reason why you left the PPD? Was it your inability to get along with others or your desire to grab a phony disability pension and screw the taxpayers?

Moving on to your next statement "You wish you could earn what I make a year COWARD", why don't you grow a set and inform the readers exactly what you mean by that. Reading your statement, it sounds as if you make a pretty hefty TAX FREE pay check every month. Please feel free to share with the readers how much you screw the city of Providence every month, and let them decide if your phony injury disability check is fair, or if your real reason for leaving was because you were a dirty corrupt cop who was on the take, and city was getting ready to can you anyway.

The readers anxiously await your response Johnny Sweat Pants.

Oh yes, I heard the guy who made the false police report is Brandon Ingegneri. He is the thug union secretary for the WFD. First he writes a letter to the Warwick Beacon asking for some print time to describe how two residents at the council meeting threatened to kill him and lump him up. Then when asked to go on the air on WPRO and discuss the issue, the little coward whipped little panzy refused to take up the invitation. What a joke of a little boy he is. But this is typical behavior from this cast of characters. Make up stories, lie, harass, and intimidate, then attempt to use law enforcement to carry out your devious little deeds. Good thing that the state police detectives saw right through the BS.

Little Brandon Ingegneri the Coward Liar.

Actually the RISP didn't see right through it. It was deemed a third party threat and therefore not a violation of the law.

You're not the only one who can APRA.

Word on the street is that every time the fire alarm goes off, little Brandon starts pointing up at the alarm yelling, THE FIRE, THE FIRE while scurrying to fit his little feet into his custom made size five fire boots.

Hey Johnny Sweat Pants-The fact remains you screwed up when you stated you left the PPD because of your corrupt politician co-workers (YOUR WORDS).

You then proceeded to make the statement "You wish you could earn what I make a year COWARD"

Well Johnny Pajamas, the world is waiting with baited breath to hear how much you make a year, and seeing that you're so proud of how much you make, why don't you become a real man, and state how much it is you actually make.

And rest assured, "what you make" isn't going to last much longer, as Steve Pare and the Providence Reztirement Board are scrutinizing your phony disability claim very closely, and once they take away that phony disability pension, you'll have much more time to make obscene gestures to the city workers from your car, as that's where you'll be living.

Johnny The COWARD is about to lose his phony disability pension-stay tuned for further details.

63 get promoted. I have to wonder how much money the city gave out in raises with these promotions?

Also, was this number of promotions part of a back door deal so the firemen would ratify the contract?

Check out the bag pipes in the photos (https://www.facebook.com/IAFFLocal2748/) (scroll down to Feb 12). Supposedly a new chief was sworn in, but the post is still advertised as VACANT (https://www.warwickri.gov/warwick-fire-department). If you’re trying to follow this on the city’s twitter account, the posts come to an abrupt end on Dec 23, 2019 (the event was Feb 12, today is Feb 23). Makes you wonder about civic pride, not by the people, but within the gov itself.
