DJB Flooring wins Majors title

By ALEX SPONSELLER DJB Flooring completed the come from behind win to top DeGiulio’s Insurance 7-6 in extra innings to claim the Warwick North Majors Championship.

DeGiulio’s took a commanding four-run lead in the fourth inning, however, the DJB bats would take off from there as it cruised the rest of the way to knot the score and earn the game-winner in the first extra inning.

“We had lost to (DeGiulio’s) three times throughout the season, but our game plan throughout the regular season was to rotate them through positions, let them learn, let them fail, but come playoff time, we were going to play to win. We stuck to that and these kids were buzz saws throughout the playoffs. It was unbelievable, it was the best baseball that they played,” said DJB manager Dave Monte.

When the team fell behind big in the fourth inning, Monte made sure to pump up his 12-year-old leaders to lead the way from there.

“I pulled them in and told them, ‘Calm down, believe in yourselves, and to the 12 year olds, you guys have to lead the way.’ We had seven 12 year olds and I told them, ‘This is on you to lead the way.’ From there, every kid was on the fence and we got a rally going. (The momentum) was huge going into extras and our pitching was incredible. We have Javier Lugo who was phenomenal pitching for us with 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh. We had the top of our order in the seventh and they stepped up, including Derrick Butler Jr. with the winning hit. It was awesome,” said Monte.

Despite falling to DeGiulio’s three times throughout the season, DJB did not blink in the championship and was confident in the matchup.

“We knew the way we had set things up that we would have a chance. They beat us three times, but we knew what they had and we were confident especially with the pitchers we were going to throw out there. The kids were rotated through positions all year long and they loved that, they want to try different things, and that is what it is all about,” said Monte.

Considering all going on in the world and the uncertainty heading into the season, Monte and company were excited to complete the season and provide the kids with another summer of fun.

“We were extremely fortunate to get to play this season, it was a great system put in place by the league,” said Monte. “Parents abided by it, the umpires were happy to be out, it was just a great season for the kids and letting them play summer baseball. It was a great summer, the baseball gods are smiling on us.”
