Every year I ask myself the same question: Why do I watch these awful award shows?
That was especially true this year, with the Golden Globes shared between two funny women offering awful jokes on two coasts.
It was an awkward evening, what with the hosts shaming the Globes for their complete lack of inclusiveness and then presenting the first two major awards to minorities.
All nominees appeared live and remote on split screens, most at home with their families. While a nice touch, we then had to watch the losers fake smiles while the winners gave their acceptance speeches.
We also had to suffer through two horrible comedy sketches before listening to two classy speeches by special award recipients Jane Fonda and Norman Lear.
“Nomadland” deservedly received Best Picture and Best Director awards for drama. Don’t miss this fabulous movie, which we rated four stars!
“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” won for best comedy/musical, beating out the movie version of “Hamilton.” Go figure. Say what?
We watched the trailers about Sacha Baron Cohen’s satire on American politics, elections, culture and handling of COVID and saw a familiarity between the distorted humor of his first film about observing American culture and this one.
Rotten Tomato audiences gave it a 65 percent. We’ll hold judgment until it shows up in Rhode Island.
“Minari” won for best foreign film. We caught it this week at the Avon. I liked it. Joyce loved it.
I get confused over Golden Globe categories, as they try to decide wither an entry is a movie, series, made-for-TV, short series, or whatever.
Having just watched Rosamond Pike in “I Care a Lot,” which GG put in the “comedy” category for some strange reason, I was happy to see the star and show rewarded but failed to see it as a comedy.
“The Crown” deservedly took home many honors. Catch it on Netflix if you haven’t already. “Schitt’s Creek” continues to win for TV comedy series. I don’t get it.
Two award winners that I’m still looking forward to seeing are the jazz-related cartoon “Soul” and Mark Ruffalo in “I Know This Much is True.”
