FROM STAFF REPORTS For the second consecutive season, the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Division I Boys Hockey Championship was cancelled due the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Bishop Hendricken and Mount St. Charles - the two top-seeded teams in the division - were set to drop the puck on the series last Friday. Hours prior to gametime, it was revealed that Mount had a positive test within its team and the game would be cancelled. Shortly after the initial announcement, the RIIL and the two competing schools announced that the series would be cancelled outright and the two clubs would be crowned co-champions.

“A COVID-positive has regrettably resulted in the cancellation of the RI Interscholastic League Boys Ice Hockey Division I Championship series. The RIIL met with both the Mt. St. Charles and Bishop Hendricken school administrations earlier today. In the spirit of good faith and understanding, the schools mutually agreed to declare Mt. St. Charles and Bishop Hendricken the 2021 Boys Ice Hockey State Champions,” the league said in a statement.

It added: “The RIIL recognizes the reality and challenges of playing during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, some of our member schools have experienced COVID-related interruptions, and for some it has meant a premature end to their seasons. We congratulate Mt. St. Charles and Bishop Hendricken on the outstanding seasons that brought them both to the title series. Furthermore, we applaud their tremendous display of sportsmanship in the face of a difficult situation.”

Hendricken also released a statement regarding the team and cancellation.

“On behalf of Bishop Hendricken High School and Hendricken Athletics, we would like to extend a heartfelt congratulations to our Varsity Hockey program on a great season and on their advancement to the finals of the Rhode Island State Hockey Tournament. We would also like to sincerely congratulate Mount St. Charles Academy on a tremendous season,” the statement read, while also revealing that the two teams will play a charity exhibition to raise funds for Bishop Feehan’s AJ Quetta, who suffered a serious injury earlier this season.

“In an effort to promote good sportsmanship and good will, both teams will play a charity exhibition game at a later date, to be announced soon, in order to honor and raise funds for Bishop Feehan High School’s A.J. Quetta, who suffered a serious injury during play earlier this winter. Once again, we want to thank our student-athletes and coaches for an outstanding season, especially under challenging circumstances. We are incredibly appreciative of all your hard work, determination, and commitment not only to Bishop Hendricken Hockey, but to the entire Athletics program. Congratulations to our seniors, to our hockey student-athletes, and coaches. We look forward to a bright future ahead.”
