Hawks pick up 2 wins to keep pace

The Bishop Hendricken hockey team won each of its games over the weekend to keep pace in the Division I standings, beating Barrington 6-0 then Moses Brown/East Providence 5-2 the following day.

The Hawks scored a pair of goals in each period in the win against Barrington. Hendricken outshot Barrington 50-17 in the lopsided win, while also converting on two power-play opportunities.

The win was a strong response to some recent losses which have dropped the Hawks to third place behind La Salle and Mount St. Charles.

“This was big, we needed it. Especially in the final four games here, we needed this win to keep pace in the standings,” said Hendricken coach Mike Soscia after the win. “This is a good confidence builder for us. This was probably one of our most complete wins this year. We set goals before each game, things like shots on goal, defense, and we accomplished those goals here tonight. Defense especially, that is important to us.”

The Hawks had six different players score in the win over Barrington. Hendricken’s goal scorers were Harrison Giuliano, William Healy, Owen Leahy, Jack Drohen, Stephen Hauser and Domenic Eacuello. Goalie Zachary Marzano stopped 17 shots in net for the Hawks.

“The guys are working hard, we have a few guys from the Barrington area so they probably wanted to step their game up. The guys are just working hard. We’ve had some good games recently, we’ve lost some tough ones, but overall the guys are working hard toward our ultimate goal. They’ve been pretty fun to watch,” said Soscia, who has stressed the importance of finishing strong to the Hawks.

“Our goal is to always finish in the top-3 and to make it to Brown. They work hard every game and we treat every game like a playoff game, especially in the last few games of the season. We just need to keep them moving toward that final goal,” said Soscia.

Hendricken turned around and topped Moses Brown/EP 5-2 the following day.

Matthew Moretti led Hendricken with a pair of goals in the win, while Nathan Palumbo, Drohen and Giuliano added scores as well. Owen Leahy was between the pipes for the Hawks and recorded 16 saves in the victory.

Hendricken will square off against second-place Mount St. Charles on Friday evening in Woonsocket, then will close out the season on Saturday when the Hawks welcome Smithfield during their senior night celebration at the Thayer Arena.
