Digging into IHOP’s $5 ‘Hoppy Hours’ offerings

We have always thought of Warwick’s IHOP as a breakfast place, famous for their many varieties of pancakes.

We recently heard about their “Hoppy Hour,” actually eight hours featuring eight different meals for $5 from 2 to 10 p.m.

A sit-down meal in a restaurant for five bucks seemed like something out of the distant past, but we decided to give it a try at 5:30 p.m. last Monday.

We were concerned to discover we were the only ones in the place (two couples came in after us), but the young woman at the counter was preparing some take-out orders.

Joyce ordered the Classic Steakburger, which she was pleased to have cooked rare and look “exactly like the menu picture.”

The juicy hamburger came with lettuce, tomato, red onion and pickles, with her choice of fries, onion rings or waffles. She chose onion rings.

I chose the ham and cheese omelette and was amazed at the size. Made with ham, Jack and cheddar cheese and a white cheese sauce, it covered the entire plate. It was served with another plate of three good-sized buttermilk pancakes.

Other $5 entrees included a breakfast sandwich, Italian cannoli pancakes, buttermilk crispy chicken sandwich, chicken and pancakes, and a two-egg breakfast with hash browns, bacon or pork and toast.

While this is not exactly gourmet dining, the meals were served hot, quickly and with good presentation.

Those conscious of their food budget could do well ordering take-out or eating in.

I really don’t know how, or for how long, they can do it at that price.

For $10 a couple, the waitress deserves a good tip.

IHOP, hoppy hour
