James E. Monroe, age 87, of Warwick, passed away on Monday, January 4, 2021 at Brentwood Nursing Home in Warwick. He was the husband of the late Helen M. (Sweeney) Monroe.

Born in Havre, Montana, a son of the late John J. and Gertrude (Blanchard) Monroe, he lived in Warwick for the last 30 years. He was a United States Navy veteran of the Korean War, and was a member of the Korean War Veterans Association. He was a founder of the Seabee Museum in Davisville, RI. Mr. Monroe was employed by Brito Construction in Bristol for 10 years before retiring 8 years ago. He was previously self-employed as the owner of Monroe Construction for 20 years. Earlier in his life, he had worked with several other area construction companies. He was a past president of the NUCA (National Utility Contractors Association). He enjoyed fly fishing.

He is survived by a son, J. Wayne Monroe and his wife Dimitria, of Lincoln; a daughter, Beverly A. Petrella and her husband John, of Warwick; two brothers, Thomas Monroe of Anchorage, AL and Lee Monroe of Moorehead, MN; four grandchildren, Kimberly Clarke, Kenneth Phillips, Megan Monroe, and Bridget Phillips; and five great-grandchildren. He was the father of the late Mark L. Monroe.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, his burial in the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery will be private.
