Laudable legislation

To the Editor:

During the five-plus hour City Council meeting on Sept. 21, a number of significant pieces of legislation were debated and passed. I would like to highlight two bills, spearheaded by my colleagues that will have a long-lasting positive impact on our city.

Ward 3 Councilman Tim Howe was the lead sponsor and author of PCO-17-20 an ordinance regarding vendor procurement. This bill encourages Warwick-based businesses to bid on city contracts. As a result of this legislation, when a company whose principal place of business is in Warwick submits a responsive bid within 7% of the lowest bid, the city council can now consider that business for the award of the contract. Businesses who have chosen to locate their company in Warwick already pay taxes and contribute to our local economy. This legislation now gives the city council the flexibly to choose a local company if they are a qualified, competitive bidder.

Also at the council meeting, Ward 6 Councilwoman Donna Travis led an effort to update and improve the Oakland Beach boardwalk. Using the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), which are federal funds, the boardwalk at Oakland Beach, which continues to be a destination for people from Warwick and across the state, will be repaired and improved for the first time since 1997.

In addition, Councilwoman Travis has been working with Mayor Solomon on the Oakland Beach Resiliency Initiative, which is an investment of over $500,000 of federal funds to improve water quality, protect existing infrastructure, and prevent beach erosion in the area of Strand Avenue and Sea View Drive.

Both Councilwoman Travis and Mayor Solomon are committed to protecting the water and land at Oakland Beach so future generations can continue to enjoy them.

I commend both Councilman Howe and Councilwoman Travis on their leadership and commitment to our city, and I look forward to continuing to work with both of them on legislation and projects that make a positive impact on our community.

Steve McAllister

City Council Ward 7
