Memorial Day gas prices lowest in almost 20 years

Gasoline prices in Rhode Island are up three cents this week, according to AAA Northeast.

AAA Northeast’s May 18 survey of prices in Rhode Island finds self-serve, regular unleaded averaging $1.96 per gallon. Rhode Island’s price is nine cents higher than the national average of $1.87. A year ago at this time, the average price in Rhode Island was 90 cents higher at $2.86 per gallon.

“Gas prices around Memorial Day have not been this cheap in nearly 20 years. However, as the country continues to practice social distancing, this year’s unofficial kick-off to summer is not going to drive the typically millions of Americans to travel,” said Lloyd Albert, Senior Vice President of AAA Public and Government Affairs. “Despite inexpensive gas prices, AAA anticipates this year’s holiday will likely set a record low for travel volume.”

The range in prices in the latest AAA survey for unleaded regular is 52 cents, from a low of $1.67 to a high of $2.19. AAA advises motorists to shop around for the best prices in their area. Please remember to slow down and move over for any emergency vehicles on the side of the road.
