Pats ready for playoff run

By ALEX SPONSELLER The Pilgrim softball team has rolled to the top of the standings in Division I this season and currently sits at 11-2 with just two games left in the regular season.

The Pats had a rough go last week when it fell to visiting St. Ray’s 4-3 in extra innings. Pilgrim held a two-run lead on Friday prior to the game being called off due to lightning. The two clubs met on Saturday to finish the game, with the Saints pulling off the comeback win.

“(St. Ray’s was) the better team on that second day, it didn’t help that our team had to play 15 innings in two days, but they were the better team that day and it is what it is. No excuses,” said Pilgrim coach Carlos Rodas.

The Lady Pats, however, answered the bell and went on to beat Chariho 10-4 and then North Kingstown 14-0 on Sunday.

Alyssa Twomey went 2-for-4 at the plate against NK with three RBI. Amelia Murphy, Audra McDonnell, Amelia Potter and Madison Wrench all added two RBI each in the win, while Madi D’Amato, Jenna Altieri, and Sophia Chevian added one apiece.

Kelsey Burr led Pilgrim in the win against Chariho, recording three RBI. McDonnell also batted in two RBI, along with Murphy, Destinee Santiago and Altieri who each added one.

“We responded well, I like this team. They check off a lot of the boxes on the intangibles, we’re going to be a tough out in the playoffs,” said Rodas. “The unknowns heading into the season, the things that we did not know about, the kids have answered a lot of those questions. They are young, but they’re unselfish and work well together. We should be good for the next few years.”

Not only have the Pilgrim bats been hot as of late, but starting pitcher Twomey has emerged as one of the top hurlers in the state.

Considering the number of games played in the past week, Rodas and his staff have been trying to manage her use in the circle and have also turned to Chevian, who got the win against Chariho.

“Now towards the end of the regular season, we have our eyes on the playoffs and we really are trying not to wear out Alyssa as our pitcher. It has been a little tough to manage from that aspect, but Sophia Chevian and has stepped up and has given us some good innings. She’s done a good job of keeping the wheels on the bus and keeping us going towards where we want to be,” said Rodas.

Pilgrim closes the regular season out this week with games against Chariho and Smithfield. As the team prepares for what should be a dog fight in the playoffs, Rodas and company are confident despite the deep talent in Division I.

“One through 11, this may be the most even group that I have seen,” said Rodas. “That has been one of the hardest parts about the season, there are no layups. I think that has prepared our young group well though, we have been in a lot of tough battles already. That is going to serve them well.”
