As they have done for decades, parishioners of St. Gregory the Great Church in Cowesett donated the food including turkeys to provide Thanksgiving food baskets for 150 individuals and families. Cheryl Berube, pastoral minister, who coordinated the holiday food drive at Sts. Rose and Clement Church for ten years before taking on the role at St. Gregory the Great four years ago, said this year presented some unique challenges because of distancing requirements, taking temperatures and contact tracing. Volunteers had to be spread out and rather than having recipients enter the church as they have done, they made curbside pickups on Tuesday. Names of the recipients are provided by the city human services department that serves as a clearinghouse for requests for assistance, ensuring needs are met and donating agencies are not duplicating efforts. This year more than 900 individuals and families will receive Thanksgiving baskets or certificates to purchase food citywide. Tuesday’s pickup ran efficiently as volunteers checked off the names of those arriving for a pickup while others fetched turkeys and loaded boxes into cars. (Warwick Beacon photos)
