More than 18 months after it closed and having undergone $150,000 of deferred maintenance and repairs, McDermott Pool reopened Monday to some very happy swimmers. The swimmers started arriving a couple of hours prior to a formal reopening ceremony that included remarks from Mayor Frank Picozzi, who expressed his amazement at how many people are excited to have the pool reopen and Bev Wiley, director of Parks and Recreation who outlined the hours of operation and stressed that because of a shortage of lifeguards, the city would not be capable of offering the hours it once had. Warwick is not alone in facing a shortage of lifeguards, Wiley said referencing conditions across the country. To make it official with members of the Trudeau Center Tigers Swim Team taking a prominent position, Mayor Picozzi snipped a ribbon. The pool is open to Warwick residents and those holding passes at no cost through Aug. 23. The hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 12 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday and 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
