Saving and changing lives through animal fostering

Posted

As the Sun began to set over Greenwich Bay this past Saturday evening at Warwick City Park a celebration for a dog named Genesis was just beginning.

Genesis' eyes were sparkling with excitement just like the sun's reflection dancing on the water, she somehow knew this gathering was in her honor! Operation Pawsibility Project a RI foster-based rescue helps many dogs find their forever homes and Genesis is one of them. Every rescue dog has a story of their own but Genesis' story gave them a reason to throw a party in her honor. The folks from Operation Pawsibility Project knew even before Genesis arrived in Rhode Island that she was a senior dog who had been living in deplorable conditions. Rescues hear all kinds of sad stories of animals in need but they really wanted to give Genesis a second chance at a new life and so her journey to Rhode Island began.

Genesis arrived in April and they quickly realized that not only was she a senior, about 14 years old but she also wasn't in the greatest of health. Being a foster based rescue they put out a plea to find a quiet, loving home for a senior Pitbull mix with health issues, not an easy task but they remained hopeful. Upon reading the foster plea, Kerry Downing of Cranston contacted the rescue to see if she might be the right home for Genesis? Downing had lost her own dog in October, she was still feeling that devastating loss when she came across the photo and posting asking for a foster home for Genesis.

As Covid was beginning to cause quarantines she thought maybe Genesis could fill her heart and home during this time. Once she met Genesis and saw what a gentle soul she has, Downing took her home to give her some much-needed TLC. Genesis's health was a concern for all and it was determined that she does have congestive heart failure. The diagnosis is not what anyone wanted to hear but the rescue is treating her with the proper medications and Downing's entire family is supplying her with all the love she so deserves, she is now home to stay.

Hence the party to celebrate Genesis, everyone from the rescue along with Downing and her family felt like this special girl deserved to be celebrated. There were balloons, two bacon burgers especially for Genesis as a special treat, many presents, a beautiful doggie cake and lots of kisses. Genesis had a smile on her face, a full belly and her heart was filled with joy, she could really feel the love! While Covid has sadly taken it's toll on so many lives it was so refreshing to hear that during Covid Genesis has brought the Downing family so much love and joy in this otherwise difficult time. They do not know how much time Genesis has due to her health but they plan on keeping her as comfortable as possible and spoiling her too! The celebration for Genesis was their way of showing her how much her life matters and how grateful they all are to have her in theirs.

If you have ever thought about fostering an animal in need please check with your local shelter. Most rescues and shelters provide everything you will need to be a foster family, you provide the love and the home. Sometimes foster families become what is known as a "foster failure" which simply means you fall in love with your foster animal and end up adopting. Really it should be called that a foster success. Genesis is a true example of a  "foster failure."
