Moving Western tale

Tom Hanks stars as Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd, a Texan who travels from small town to small town a few years after the Civil War to bring “The News of the World” to the townsfolk (hence the clever title).

The captain comes upon an abandoned 10-year-old orphaned German girl (Helena Zengel) who had been raised by the Kiowa Indians and sets out to return her to her aunt and uncle.

The man and the girl do not speak each other’s languages and the girl is frightened and rebellious.

They encounter many dangers and slowly learn to trust and respect each other.

This may sound a bit corny, but in the hands of Tom Hanks it becomes and uplifting, poignant, exciting tale of the Old West.

If you want an inside look at what it was probably like in Texas back in the 1870s, you have got to see this wonderful movie.

One scene has the captain and Johanna being chased through the rocky hills of northern Texas that reminded me of an old Roy Rogers movie.

If you want something uplifting these days, “News of the World” is good medicine.

Rated PG-13, with some violence.

Sci-fi

George Cooney stars in this profound sci-fi movie with an interesting twist.

He plays a scientist alone in the Arctic Circle after a cataclysmic event wipes out most of the world’s population.

A mysterious young girl is left behind and the terminally sick man bonds with her.

Meanwhile, out in space, a team of four astronauts is searching for a habitable planet. They are unable to make contact with their base, but eventually reach the Arctic base.

That’s about all we can tell you without spoiling the innovative ending.

Great special effects and a clever story.

Dark comedy

Originally titled “My So-called Wife” in 2017 on the Bravo channel, this two-season entertaining black comedy is now available on Netflix.

Inbar Levi stars as Maddie, a con artist who woos men and women to feel in love with her, marries them, steals all their money, and disappears to go on to her next scam.

She works with two partners for a mysterious man called The Doctor.

Three previous “scamees” team up to track her down, participating in small-time scams to fund their pursuit.

Unbeknownst to Maddie, her latest target turns out to be an FBI agent chasing down The Doctor.

Some of the scams pulled are very clever and should be a warning to viewers to beware.

The show runs for two seasons and will keep you interested as it gets crazier and crazier. There are a few outrageous coincidences along the way, but if you accept them you will have lots of enjoyable hours watching.
