Morgan Freeman played Dr. Alex Cross in “Along Came a Spider.” Renée Zelwegger starred in “Bridget Jones’s Diary.” The Farrelly brothers struck out with “Say It Isn’t So.”

URI Theatre presented “Twelfth Night,” while Brown Theatre was doing “Dracula” and Newgate Theatre did Sam Shepard’s “The Lie of the Mind”, starring the late Wendy Overly and Clare Blackmer. Gamm presented two Moliere farces, “School For Wives” and “Tartuffe,” directed by Fred Sullivan.

Theodore Bikel starred in “Fidler on the Roof” at PPAC. Also at PPAC was “Snoopy, the Musical.”

RIC professor of music Judith Stillman highlighted the RI Philharmonic’s concert at RIC’s Foundation gala.

Theatre-by-the-Sea scored with “The King and I.” Ed Shea’s 2nd Story Theatre moved to its new home in Warren.

40 years ago

Ten year-old Ricky Schroeder starred with William Holden in a tearjerker titled “The Earthling.” Ringo Starr starred in a horrible movie titled “Caveman.” The Australian classic “Gallipoli” was 100 times better.

“The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” was coming to the Ocean State Theatre. CBS substituted “playhouse” for that bad word.

Neil Simon’s “They’re Playing Our Song” followed. I played racquetball with Richard Ryder, the star of the show. He annihilated me.

Styx played the Providence Civic Center. Tickets were $10.50 and $12.50. AC/DC sold out the Civic Center.
