Meadowbrook Theatre in Warwick closed.

Perishable Theatre presented Mac Wellman’s avant garde “Girl Gone,” starring Casey Seymour Kim and David Tessier.

Johnny Depp starred in Roman Polanski’s occult mystery, The Ninth Gate. Brian DePalma’s Mission to Mars, starring Gary Sinese, was a bore. Julia Roberts starred in the hit of the month, Erin Brokovitch.

On one of my trips to Washington, D.C. I caught one of the best plays I have ever seen, “Wit,” starring Judith Light as the college professor battling ovarian cancer. It had one of the most moving closing scenes I have ever seen.

Spiro Gyra was at the Greenwich Odeum.

The Theatre Company of Warwick presented “Breaking Legs” at the historic Pontiac Mills, directed by Donna Adamonia. Cost of play and dessert buffet was $15, $12 for seniors and students.

Conway Tours offered a day trip to Yankee Candle and Olde Mystic Village for $25.

40 Years Ago

The Broadway Musical “Eubie” was at the Ocean State Theatre (PPAC). Tickets were $10 and $15.

Dom Deluise starred in Fatso at the Showcase. The big hot was The Coalminer’s Daughter, with Sissy Spacek playing Loretta Lynn. Peter Sellers’ Being There was also a big hit.

Iggy Pop was at the Chateause de Ville in Warwick, now a medical building.

Jane Oliver was at the Ocean State. What a great singer she was!

Jazz artists Zoot Sims, Jimmy Rowles and Carol Sloane were at the Providence Marriott.

“Night of the Iguana” was at Trinity Rep.

Victor Borge played with the R.I. Philharmonic, and John Denver was at the Providence Civic Center.

Richard Jenkins and George Martin starred in “Waiting for Godot” at Trinity.
