SHOPLIFTING

At approximately 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 7, Officer Thomas Paine responded to the Stop & Shop at 2470 Warwick Ave. for a report of a shoplifting incident.

At the scene, a loss prevention associate for the store told Paine he had observed a male suspect take approximately $54 worth of merchandise from the store without making any attempt to pay. The associate attempted to stop the man in the parking lot, but the man reportedly refused to cooperate and left the scene in a black sedan bearing Connecticut registration.

A suspect was identified based on the vehicle’s registration and security camera footage from the store. The matter was forwarded to detectives and a warrant was subsequently issued for the suspect’s arrest on a charge of shoplifting.

Just after 2 p.m. on Jan. 25, Officer Evan Johnson responded to the Walmart at 840 Post Road for a report of a shoplifting incident that occurred earlier that day.

At the scene, a loss prevention associate for the store told Johnson that a man and woman had been observed bagging unscanned items multiple times at several different self-checkout registers. The two were said to have scanned items of lesser value before bagging the more expensive items.

As the man and woman attempted to leave the store, they were met by an employee who asked to check their receipt. At that point, they are said to have left behind two large bags of dog food but exited the store with other items that had not been paid for. They then entered a Chevrolet pickup truck and left the scene.

The value of the stolen items was estimated at just more than $100. Through a check of security camera footage, Johnson was able to identify both the vehicle involved and the male suspect. A warrant was then arrested for the man’s arrest on a charge of shoplifting.

At 3:45 p.m. on Jan. 31, David A. Lefore, 60, 121 Ring St., Providence, responded to Warwick Police headquarters to turn himself in on the warrant. He was processed and later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.

They then exited the store, at which point they were stopped by security. The combined value of the stolen items, which were recovered, was placed at roughly $44.
