DUI

At approximately 6:45 p.m. on May 16, Officer Ben Bratko responded to West Shore Road for a report of a vehicle, described as a 2008 BMW, operating erratically and crossing into the oncoming lane of travel.

Bratko spotted the suspect vehicle and observed it “crossing the fog line and center line multiple times.” He initiated a motor vehicle stop once the car turned onto Sandy Lane.

Bratko made contact with the vehicle’s operator, whose eyes were reportedly “bloodshot and glassy.” The officer also reports he “detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage” on the man’s breath and that his speech was slurred.

The operator is said to have agreed to undergo field sobriety testing, which he reportedly failed.

Altino V. Estrela, 56, 22 Earl St., Apt. A1, West Warwick, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. While at headquarters, he is said to have refused a chemical breath test.

Estrela was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on charges of driving under the influence and refusal to submit to a chemical test, second offense. He was additionally cited for laned roadway violations.

LARCENY

Shortly before 9 a.m. on May 21, Officer Russell Brown responded to a Lane One home for a report of larceny.

At the scene, the reporting party told Brown that he left his home for a doctor’s appointment between 7:50 a.m. and 10 a.m. on May 20. At noon that day, he discovered his laptop – a MacBook Air valued at roughly $450 – was missing. The reporting party was unsure if the laptop had been stolen from his unlocked vehicle or inadvertently left on the roof of his vehicle and fallen off while traveling.

A subsequent search of the area and checks with multiple pawn shops proved unsuccessful. The matter was later closed.

At approximately 9:15 p.m. on May 22, Officer Anthony D’Abrosca responded to the Texas Roadhouse at 1200 Quaker Lane for a report of larceny. Dispatch advised that the window of a vehicle had been smashed and that items were reportedly missing from inside.

At the scene, the reporting party – an employee of the restaurant – said she arrived at around 2:30 p.m. that day and returned to her vehicle to leave at approximately 9:05 p.m. At that point, she discovered the rear driver’s-side window of her vehicle had been smashed. She then found multiple items had been taken, including a purse containing cards and a driver’s license, earbuds valued at $200 and two pairs of Ray-Ban sunglasses with a combined value of $400.

No security camera footage was available. The matter was documented.

FRAUD

At approximately 2:30 p.m. on May 26, Officer Jonathan Byrne received a report of fraud involving a credit card.

Byrne made contact with the reporting party, who said his credit card had been charged $299.99 by an entity that appeared as “Netflix” on his statement. The reporting party said he does not subscribe to Netflix. The man then called a number on related confirmation email he had received. The person who answered is said to have told him to purchase gift cards in order to receive a refund. At that point, he contacted police.

Attempts to reach the number the reporting party had called were unsuccessful. The matter was documented.

At the scene, the reporting parties told O’Connell that a trampoline at the property – part of the equipment for a 16-foot WindRider boat – had been damaged by a cut that appeared to have been made with a sharp metal object sometime during the overnight hours of May 19-20. Similar damage was later discovered to a tarp used to wrap the boat.

NO/SUSPENDED LICENSE

At approximately 11:15 p.m. on May 26, Officer Jacob Elderkin was conducting a routine patrol at the Motel 6 on Jefferson Boulevard when he observed a vehicle with Massachusetts registration pull out of the parking lot and onto the road.

The vehicle had “heavily-tinted windows” and an inoperable brake light, according to the officer. A records check then found the license plates did not match the vehicle.

Elderkin initiated a motor vehicle stop and made contact with the operator, who was unable to provide his license or registration. The operator is said to have initially provided officers with a false name. He was taken into custody, at which point he reportedly provided his actual identity. Another records check found the man was wanted on four active bench warrants issued from an unspecified court.

Dean Thompson, 29, 93 Diamond St., Providence, was taken into custody on the warrants and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. At that point, it was discovered he did not have an active driver’s license and had at least three prior convictions for driving without a license.
