It is with heavy hearts that Roger Williams Park Zoo announces the passing of Tufani, the beloved 9-year-old Masai giraffe. After showing signs of gastrointestinal complications, the zoo’s animal care staff worked diligently to provide ongoing medical assistance and keep her comfortable.

The zoo brought in numerous veterinary experts to help plan a course of treatment, but despite all of these efforts, on Thursday, Jan. 14, Tufani passed away.

Her name meaning “storm” in Swahili, Tufani was born November 27, 2012, at Franklin Park Zoo. She joined the Roger Williams Park Zoo family in August 2014.

Tufani was known by her keepers as a spunky goofball. “She had a mischievous, curious nature about her,” said zookeeper Rachael. “She loved to beg for treats and was really just an absolute sweetheart.”

She was loved dearly by her keepers, the zoo staff, and volunteers alike. Her kind personality made her a favorite with Zoo visitors who came to feed and visit the giraffes.

The zoo family will hold a very special place in its heart for Tufani and she will be deeply missed. We encourage people to share photos and fond memories of Tufani on the zoo’s Facebook page, facebook.com/RWPZoo, or its Instagram page, instagram.com/rwpzoo, so that her keepers may see your remembrances and kind words.
